This project focuses on the holiday shopping frenzy and the Oniomania (the uncontrollable urge to by things) that ensues. Unsuspecting shoppers were photographed in five distinct retail districts in Los Angeles. (The Third Street Promenade, Century City, Beverly Hills, The Grove and Santee Alley) Beginning on Black Friday and continuing through Christmas.
The day after Thanksgiving marks the “official” start of the holiday shopping season and has been dubbed “Black Friday” This refers to when retailers go from being unprofitable, or “in the red” to being profitable, or “in the black.” This shift in profitability is normally the opposite for the consumer, as the accumulate more goods, they may accumulate more debt and placing themselves “in the red.”
This sculptural photographic installation consists of 583 shoppers arranged by location and bag-type, accompanied by a muzak inspired soundtrack entitled “Mu$ic To Shop Buy”
