This project describes suburban warehouse stores as temples. By capturing the mystic mood of the architectural details in the midnight through long exposure, I wanted the appearances to invoke ironic holiness and unconscious domination of the commercial brand in people’s lives.
I think the strip malls in suburban AMerica can be seen as another kind of religious figure in a sense that the strong brand power and the massive marketing drive, which seen so powerful as religious persuasion, are ruling the lifestyle in suburbia and people gather regularly to the same place to communicate, to consume, to get rid of sadness and anger, just as people go to church to pray, to be inspired, to be blessed in the community every week.
I am not criticizing specific aspects on commercialism through these images. I want to suggest a slightly different point of view about its strong dominance and influence on everyday life.
